Hospice Service For Those That Serve

As a We Honor Veterans Partner, Thomaston Hospice Incorporated will implement ongoing Veteran-centered education for their staff and volunteers to help improve the care they provide to the Veterans they proudly serve. The nation is seeing many of the Veterans who served in World War II and Korea pass away and the number of deaths of Vietnam Veterans is beginning to rise.

By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, Thomaston Hospice is better able to accompany and guide Veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending. And in cases where there might be some specific needs related to the Veteran’s military service, combat experience or other traumatic events, Thomaston Hospice will find tools to help support those they are caring for.

“All hospices are serving Veterans but often aren’t aware of that person’s service in the armed forces,” said J. Donald Schumacher, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) president and CEO.

“Through We Honor Veterans we are taking a giant step forward in helping hospice and palliative care providers understand and serve Veterans at the end of life and work more effectively with VA medical facilities in their communities.”

Black Moon

new_moonWe have all heard the phrase “once in a blue moon”.
But have you heard of a “black moon”?

Every ten to thirteen years, a month will have two new moon phases. This will occur tomorrow night.

With a new moon there is a feeling of starting anew, a fresh start, a new beginning. Although the new moon data is not as popular as the full moon, the dates are sought out by many people who know just how meaningful the new moon event can be.

In the dark twilight of the black moon, we just don't sense the significance of the new moon phase. We are less likely to look up when the moon is not as bright.

9th Grade Academy

Thomaston-Upson Schools to Launch 9th Grade Academy for 2011-2012 School Year

Upson-Lee High School 9th Grade Academy is the freshman year for students at ULHS.

One goal of the academy is to ease the transition from middle school to high school. Another goal is to retain the community atmosphere among students and teachers.

Highly qualified teachers will work closely with one another to ensure that all ninth graders are mastering the demands of the rigorous, college-prep curriculum embodied in the Georgia Performance Standards. In addition, U-L 9th Grade Academy will offer courses and support initiatives at all levels to ensure that all academy students are promoted to the 10th grade and are on-track to graduate.

Research has indicated that the transition from 8th to 9th grade is extremely important to the academic achievement and success of high school students.

Cricket Chirps: Nature's Thermometer

jiminyDid you know that you can tell the temperature by counting the chirps of a cricket? Here's the formula:

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit, count number of chirps in 14 seconds then add 40 to get temperature.

Example: 30 chirps + 40 = 70° F

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count number of chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4 to get temperature.

Example: 48 chirps /(divided by) 3 + 4 = 20° C

Julie's Garden Spot: Avoiding Poison Ivy

PoisonIvyYoungThe rash from poison ivy, oak or sumac usually starts out with red blotches but as we scratch, it develops into painful itchy pus-filled blisters.

In the case of poison ivy, the rash is caused by an oily substance called urushiol that is carried in the leaves, stems and roots. One billionth of a gram can cause a rash. When you come in contact with it, you have about 15 minutes to wash it off with soap and water in order to avoid a reaction. If you don’t, your body develops sensitivity to it and over the next 24 to 48 hours, you will develop a rash.  If left untreated, the resulting sores can become infected.

Besides causing severe infections, poison ivy can also be dangerous when any part of the plant is burned and resulting smoke is inhaled. Firefighters in particular have to be very careful because once this smoke is inhaled, it can cause severe irritation to the lining of their lungs, mouth and nose. Also, their faces and any part of their body exposed to the smoke will develop the rash.

In summer, there is a sharp increase in the number of cases reported because we spend more time outdoors. About 90 percent of people will develop an allergic reaction to poison ivy.  Approximately 55 million Americans a year experience reactions to poison ivy, oak and sumac resulting in 1.5 million emergency room visits annually.

Poison ivy is a woody plant with three-leaf clusters. Leaves can be smooth or notched. The plants produce white berrylike fruit that produce even more poison ivy plants as they come in contact with the soil.

There are several “look alike” plants that grow in our area such as Virginia creeper and blackberry vines. If you are unsure of whether to avoid such plants, the best advice is still, Leaves of three, let them be!”

Dog Days

The phrase "Dog Days" conjures up the hottest, most sultry days of summer. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the Dog Days: the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, coinciding with the heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.

The rising of Sirius does not actually affect the weather (some of our hottest and most humid days occur after August 11), but for the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the dog daysseason of the Nile's flooding, so they used the star as a "watchdog" for that event.

Since its rising also coincided with a time of extreme heat, the connection with hot, sultry weather was made for all time:
"Dog Days bright and clear,
Indicate a happy year.
But when accompanied by rain,
For better times our hopes are vain."
